Choose to work with someone you trust

For many people, money can be a sensitive subject. It’s important to select a financial advisor, yes, who can do the job; but finding someone who you like and trust can be equally as important. My job is to get to know you as intimately as possible so that I can help get you where you want to be.

I serve clients in the Treasure Valley of Idaho, but am able to work with anyone across the United States. I build and maintain custom investment portfolios for my clients. I help clients plan for retirement and work to ensure proper money management. I also work with many tax and estate planning professionals to ensure my clients’ entire financial picture is well taken care of.

Below you will find a few major components of my investing philosophy and style. As a fully independent advisor, I think it’s important to understand that the way I invest my client assets is the exact same way I invest my own. Think of a conventional medical doctor who sees a naturopathic doctor for their own medical needs. Or a contractor who uses cheap materials but only the best for their own home. As a client of Sage Mountain, I am in it together with you.

Individual Stock Exposure

For a bulk of the portfolio, I use broad-based index fund ETFs for market-like returns and diversification. However, for a smaller chunk (~10-20% based on risk tolerance), I include some individual stocks that I closely monitor and even hold in my own personal portfolio. The goal is to have this section achieve outperformance over the long run.

Focus on US Equities

Over the last decade, international stocks have earned a little over half what the S&P 500 has returned on an annualized basis. Even when investing in predominantly US equities, you still get international exposure since Americans aren’t the only ones buying iPhones. Unless global dynamics change, I don’t see why I would invest elsewhere.

Alternative Investments

Whether we are talking about exposure to gold, digital assets, private equity or private credit, I am open to them all. Do I think these are right for every client? Absolutely not. Access to private markets will ultimately depend on financial suitability, but I do believe that alternative investments can serve a place in the right client’s portfolio.

How do I make money?

Many financial advisors at popular chains across the country are compensated through revenue-sharing agreements with mutual fund companies. This means that they are compensated more when they put certain investments in your portfolio, even if better and less expensive options exist. This is not how I am compensated.

I am a fee-only financial advisor. What that basically means is that I only receive a fee for my services from my clients directly, not from commissions or any other transactional fees. This helps reduce conflicts of interest. My fee is an ongoing percentage of the assets I manage for a client. So basically, as you make money and your portfolio grows, I benefit and vice versa when portfolio values are down.
